Can data help reduce poverty?

The answer is yes, if we consider the experience of organizations such as BBVA Microfinance Foundation. At Oracle Day, a meeting that brought together more than 1,200 participants in Madrid to discuss the future of technology, their head of Technology & Data, João Costa, explained the inherent difficulty of gathering data from the people served by the Foundation, because of their vulnerability and because very often they are financially excluded.

During his talk about BBVAMF’s relationship banking model, he referred to the importance of data quality in “really helping people.” Data collated and published by the Foundation every year in its Social Performance Report, that present a true picture of its work in five Latin American countries.
