The Corporación para las Microfinanzas de Puerto Rico (Microfinanzas PR) was set up in April 2008 by means of a partnership agreement between the BBVA Microfinance Foundation and The Banco de Desarrollo Económico para Puerto Rico (BDE)1 . Microfinanzas PR is the first microfinance entity in the country, which provides financing for low-income people from Puerto Rico in order to develop their productive activities and promote their self-employment.
Through Microfinanzas PR, the Foundation assists more than 1,000 low-income people from the island, 51% of whom are women.
Microfinanza PR business model stands out as for the personalized treatment given to the clients by the microfinance managers. They create new approach channels with them, such as their specialized products to meet the needs and circumstances of the low-resources businessmen, and facing this way the obstacles they may find in traditional banking. Among the above-mentioned products there are some loans to be invested in working capital, buying materials, buying equipment and operating capital.
