Primary goals: employment and education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">There was no time to waste in these two weeks of debates and conf<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">erences of the<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/es\/csw\/csw61-2017\" target=\"_blank\">61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">at the\u00a0<strong>United Nations<\/strong> headquarters. Aware that there is still a long way to go, the agenda was very intense. Priority issues were on the table, such as\u00a0<strong>the importance of women occupying their rightful place in the changing labor market.<\/strong>\u00a0The conclusions included evidence that they managed to outline a very clear roadmap <strong>to\u00a0overcome barriers and\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbva.com\/es\/noticias\/asuntos-sociales\/gente\/la-igualdad-genero-aumentaria-billones-pib-mundial-menos-una-decada\/\" target=\"_blank\">make progress in gender equality.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;The goal of our time is parity&#8221;. These words spoken by\u00a0<strong>Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations<\/strong>, concisely summarize the spirit of this 61st session. Parity is understood from the political, cultural, economic and social standpoint, but achieving it won&#8217;t be easy:\u00a0<strong>&#8220;This is a battle&#8230; a fight&#8221;<\/strong>, Guterres stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"es\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I told NGOs at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CSW61?src=hash\">#CSW61<\/a>: women&#8217;s rights are human rights &#8212; and attacks on women are attacks on all of us <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bDdbUKccNs\">https:\/\/t.co\/bDdbUKccNs<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JUudQUn030\">pic.twitter.com\/JUudQUn030<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ant\u00f3nio Guterres (@antonioguterres) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antonioguterres\/status\/842779696546897920\">17 de marzo de 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The roadmap where <strong>the\u00a0largest intergovernmental UN meeting on gender equality and women&#8217;s empowerment <\/strong>has arrived, in which representatives of the Member States, UN entities,\u00a0<strong>BBVA Microfinance Foundation\u00a0<\/strong>and NGOs from all regions of the world have taken part, establishes a number of urgent tasks, because there are many barriers. These include unfair employment conditions, a shadow economy, negative gender stereotypes, lack of promotion at work and unpaid work in the home environment; however,\u00a0<strong>problems have not only been put on the table, but also solutions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">During this event they spoke about\u00a0<strong>the need to promote measures to protect working women with children<\/strong>, education as a tool for inclusion, technology training, promotion of decent employment, measures against violence, equality policies in wages or the development of indigenous women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">After two weeks of intense work,\u00a0there is a good feeling and there seems to be a strong commitment to pull in the same direction. &#8220;We&#8217;ve heard from all parties accepting the imperative of putting this knowledge into practice,&#8221; declared\u00a0<strong>Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The\u00a0<\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/-\/media\/headquarters\/attachments\/sections\/csw\/61\/csw61_agreed_conclusions_advance_unedited_version_24_march_2017.pdf?vs=3358\" target=\"_blank\">final conclusions of the CSW61\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">are calling on the parties to make every effort and manage <strong>to\u00a0economically empower all women in a world where the right to employment and labor rights are guaranteed.<\/strong>\u00a0And a date has been set for that commitment: 2020, ten years before<strong> the\u00a02030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\u00a0<\/strong>can be held accountable for what is expected of it. By that time, the battle for parity, which the head of the United Nations referred to will have to have been won.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Education and wealth<\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Education is another key factor for women to have equal conditions and improve their economic and social situation. In the UN campaign\u00a0<\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/gefi\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Education First Initiative<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">it is considered a fundamental right and the main tool for sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Once again,\u00a0<strong>the data provide a broader view of reality.<\/strong> According to this campaign, if something as basic as all women completing elementary school is achieved, the number of early marriages would be reduced by 64%;\u00a0the percentage of pregnancies at a premature age by 59%;\u00a0and maternal mortality in childbirth by 66%. If all women reached secondary education, infant mortality would be reduced by 49% and more than 12 million children wouldn&#8217;t suffer stunted growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the BBVAMF Group, the proportion of women who\u00a0either only attended elementary school or failed to complete it has been reduced by 650 bps in five years. In general,\u00a0<strong>higher quotas are being reached at the maximum level of education for each cohort.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9167\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9167\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9167\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/rut-impartiendo-educacion-financiera-del-programa-ahorro-para-todos-1024x583.png\" alt=\"rut-impartiendo-educacion\" width=\"1024\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/rut-impartiendo-educacion-financiera-del-programa-ahorro-para-todos-1024x583.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/rut-impartiendo-educacion-financiera-del-programa-ahorro-para-todos-1024x583-180x102.png 180w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/rut-impartiendo-educacion-financiera-del-programa-ahorro-para-todos-1024x583-768x437.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rut, advisor\u00a0of Financiera Confianza, teaches\u00a0the importance of saving\u00a0to women\u00a0and men\u00a0of the\u00a0program &#8220;Ahorro para todos&#8221; (Saving for Everyone)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">But there&#8217;s more,\u00a0<strong>education directly affects the income of the entrepreneurs that BBVAMF supports.<\/strong> The difference in the value of average sales of women who complete secondary education compared to those who have not reached that level is more than 11%. For men, this difference is about 14%. However, although there is a causal relationship between education and wealth, women are the ones who see their development conditioned to live in households with more people (3.14 versus 2.95 members, in the case of men with the same level of education).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The data reflect some advances that are unfortunately not enough. Women continue to suffer from poverty, lack of education, unemployment and an unfair labor market.
