{"id":28545,"date":"2019-12-19T10:45:26","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T09:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/alianza-impulsar-desarrollo-rural-america-latina-traves-una-agricultura-inteligente-tecnologica\/"},"modified":"2019-12-19T19:30:02","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T18:30:02","slug":"alianza-impulsar-desarrollo-rural-america-latina-traves-una-agricultura-inteligente-tecnologica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/alianza-impulsar-desarrollo-rural-america-latina-traves-una-agricultura-inteligente-tecnologica\/","title":{"rendered":"Partnership to drive rural development in Latin America through technology and smart farming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BBVA Microfinance Foundation (BBVAMF) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iica.int\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inter American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA)<\/a>, which is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/la-fundacion-microfinanzas-bbva-premio-ciudadano-corporativo-las-americas-2018-la-organizacion-los-estados-americanos\/\">Organization of American States (OAS)<\/a>, have signed a partnership agreement to drive financial inclusion and innovation in the agricultural and rural sector in the five Latin American countries where the Foundation is present (Colombia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Chile and Panama), where 2.2 million low-income entrepreneurs are being served. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Memorandum of Understanding signed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/proposito-nos-une\/\">Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) <\/a><\/span><b>is a roadmap to implement joint initiatives that contribute to the development of vulnerable population segments, paying special attention to women and the youth.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Both parties have agreed to focus on specialized training and to design <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/banco-adopem-e-iica-unidos-para-capacitar-a-productores-agropecuarios\/\">programs that are already being carried out in the Dominican Republic<\/a>\u00a0with the purpose of improving the standard of living of small farmers, through climate change adaptation measures, digital tools and skills training related to the needs in the agricultural sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cTo drive the progress of people under vulnerable conditions, knowledge and good practices must be combined, and this is one of the objectives of this agreement, which strengthens our commitment to rural areas, where there are higher levels of poverty and financial exclusion\u201d,<\/strong> stressed Javier M. Flores; Dominican Republic minister of Agriculture, Osmar Ben\u00edtez; and general director for IICA, Manuel Otero during the signing of the partnership agreeement<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/revistaprogreso\/en\/manuel-otero-general-director-of-the-iica\/\">Manuel Otero, general director for IICA<\/a>, emphasized the value of working together to support the progress of farmers and to bring digitalization to rural areas,<strong> \u201cWe need climatically smart farming, one that is modern and with a broad technological base, but also inclusive and able to generate new development opportunities for traditionally underserved groups, like rural women and youth.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Also present during the signing ceremony, was Osmar Ben\u00edtez, acting as Dominican Republic\u2019s Minister of Agriculture and president of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (JIA), which is the supreme governing body of IICA, composed of 34 member states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the context of this agreement, BBVAMF works with IICA Play, a free application created with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/microsoft-and-bbva-microfinance-foundation-unite-to-develop-initiatives-that-promote-innovation-and-entrepreneurship-in-vulnerable-communities\/\">Microsoft<\/a>, to make specialized content related to agriculture and farming more accessible to all.
