{"id":25058,"date":"2019-05-03T14:56:22","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T12:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/?p=25058"},"modified":"2019-06-17T13:25:56","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T11:25:56","slug":"presentation-in-spain-of-the-2019-social-institutions-and-gender-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/presentation-in-spain-of-the-2019-social-institutions-and-gender-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Presentation in Spain of the 2019 Social Institutions and Gender Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Enterprising women, leaders of social change in Ibero- America<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBVA Microfinance Foundation<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(BBVAMF), together with the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/dev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OECD Development Centre<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.segib.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibero-American General Secretariat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SEGIB<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are presenting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genderindex.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the Social Institutions and Gender Index<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(SIGI) in Madrid, Spain. This report, elaborated by the OECD, reflects women\u2019s situation in 180 countries regarding discrimination in the family, restricted physical integrity, limited access to productive and financial resources, and restrained civil liberties. <strong>These dimensions look at the gaps that legislation, prevalence and attitudes create between women and men in terms of rights and opportunities.<\/strong> Discriminatory social institutions perpetuate gender gaps in education, employment, or health, hampering progress and development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to results of the fourth edition of the SIGI, the level of gender-based discrimination in social institutions in the American continent, which includes laws, social norms and practices, is 25% (18% in North America, 25% in Central and South America and 27% in the Caribbean), lagging behind Europe, (17%) which is the region with the lowest level of discrimination towards women and girls in terms of social institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Over the past 20 years, Latin America\u2019s legal framework has considerably evolved, mostly in politics, in economics and in laws that protect women from gender violence.<\/strong> Latin American countries have low or very low levels of discrimination (notably, 15% in Colombia and 18% in Dominican Republic), except in Chile (36%) and Paraguay (33%), registering medium levels of discrimination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Still, a lot has to be done;<\/strong> the region\u2019s main concern is discrimination in the family sphere, linked to property management and necessary to conduct a business or request a loan, because even if there are no legal restrictions against it (some countries explicitly prohibit any kind of discrimination towards women), discriminatory social norms and practices still hinder its effective implementation.
