This topic was discussed in the panel entitled <strong>\u201cInvest intelligently, Innovate for change: Experiences on innovative financing for women\u201d<\/strong>, organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Women<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/entidades\/microserfin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microserfin<\/a>, the Panamanian institution of BBVA Microfinance Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The event has been focused on the importance of economically empowering Panamanian women to lead social, entrepreneurial and economic development. The Regional Office\u2019s specialist on economic empowerment policies, Raquel Coello, noted that financing models must be \u201cinnovative and sustainable\u201d. This message has been reinforced by the Minister for Panama\u2019s Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Authority (Ampyme), Maria Celia Dopeso.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24444\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24444\" class=\"wp-image-24444 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ONU-Mujeres-y-Microserfin-acto-D\u00eda-de-la-Mujer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ONU-Mujeres-y-Microserfin-acto-D\u00eda-de-la-Mujer.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ONU-Mujeres-y-Microserfin-acto-D\u00eda-de-la-Mujer-180x103.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ONU-Mujeres-y-Microserfin-acto-D\u00eda-de-la-Mujer-768x438.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Event organized by UN Women and Microserfin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On his part, Microserfin\u2019s general manager, Daniel Oblitas, assured that <strong>\u201cfinancial inclusion, supported by technological innovation and digitalization, promotes the progress of our female entrepreneurs we serve<\/strong>, and they are essential in improving the lives of their families and communities, including that of their country.\u201d 43% of the the institution\u2019s loan portfolio is composed of enterprising women. 36% live in rural areas and 77% are vulnerable. Most of them work in trade, services or agricultural activities and production, creating employment and strengthening the value chain. Of all these women, 4 in every 10 develop their livelihoods without added income or support from a spouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1gueda Santos is one of these women. It\u2019s very clear for her that making financing accessible to female entrepreneurs is to give them the opportunity that they don\u2019t usually have. She makes traditional costumes, the <em>montunos<\/em> and <em>polleras<\/em>, and also the <em>tembleques<\/em>, a traditional headdress for women.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24451\" style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24451\" class=\"wp-image-24451 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/\u00c1gueda-Santos-emprendedora-de-Microserfin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/\u00c1gueda-Santos-emprendedora-de-Microserfin.jpg 472w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/\u00c1gueda-Santos-emprendedora-de-Microserfin-180x164.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Female entrepreneur \u00c1gueda Santos, during her panel intervention<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In her case, as is the case of many women around the world, she learned the craft from her mother, and has perfected the needlework technique thanks to training courses.
