You do not often see a woman managing a foundry, but Francisca Cabrera is a very special one. She has taken over this business, run by her family for 40 years in the Dominican region of Los Alcarrizos, in West Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n<p>She has modernized the small factory, improving the day-to-day working processes, acquired a polishing drum to polish and shine up the pieces and has also begun using casts for the fastest-selling products. Now eight employees are working there, one of them Francisca\u2019s son.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22892\" style=\"width: 647px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22892\" class=\"wp-image-22892 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Objetos-de-aluminio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"637\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Objetos-de-aluminio.jpg 637w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Objetos-de-aluminio-180x117.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aluminum articles fabricated in Francisca Cabrera&#8217;s foundry<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They produce all sorts of items: ladles of various sizes, lemon squeezers\u2026 not forgetting, naturally, mashers for potatoes and to make the traditional Dominican <em>tostones<\/em>\u2026 an essential feature in all kitchens throughout the country. Her best customers are the residents of the Villa Consuelo (Villac\u00f3n) area, where several distributors sell the pieces she manufactures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With the loan she has received, she has bought raw materials for the business and has been able to create a small inventory of the most popular products.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Francisca has been a client of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/entidades\/banco-de-ahorro-y-credito-adopem\/\">Banco Adopem<\/a>, BBVA Microfinance Foundation\u2019s institution in the Dominican Republic, since 2017. Before managing the foundry, she had a beauty salon, and she is now thinking of reopening it.
