Jessica Hern\u00e1ndez, a Colombian female entrepreneur of the Foundation, has become the face and the voice of the million vulnerable women served by the BBVAMF in Latin America &#8211; enterprising women who are good examples of how, when given a chance, they can overcome adversities even when relying only on limited resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI am a woman, I am an entrepreneur and I\u2019m not afraid to start a new business and make it successful\u201d<\/strong>, she has said during a conversation with Mar\u00eda Emma Mej\u00eda, Colombian Ambassador to the United Nations. At 28 years old, Jessica speaks with determination, confident that she is providing for her four children and managing with two small businesses in Soacha, a district on the outskirts of Bogota and prioritized by the Government in the peace process.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Historia de vida de Jessica Hernandez, emprendedora de Bancam\u00eda\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yc7_8Zuy7BU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Without any word of complaint, she has spent years walking through her neighborhood while carrying a washing machine so she could rent it by the hour to local residents. She asserts that she lacks nothing but time; to take care of her kids and boost her 8-month old project consisting of a small sewing workshop for kids\u2019 clothes. Beyond that, she feels lucky: finally her house has new roofing and refrigerator. <strong>\u201cNobody else took a chance on a penniless mother heading a household\u201d,<\/strong> she claims, referring to the support she received from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/entidades\/bancamia\/\">Bancam\u00eda, the Colombian MFI of the BBVA Microfinance Foundation.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNobody else took a chance on a penniless mother heading a household\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe cater to the needs of low-income entrepreneurs, the majority of them women, just like Jessica, who with their work and effort, are able to improve their lives and contribute to their communities\u201d, Javier M. According to <strong>Achim Steiner, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.undp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UNDP<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u2019s highest representative<\/strong>, \u201cfinancial inclusion is central to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the SDG; it constitutes the <em>veins<\/em> the Agenda for Sustainable Development runs on\u201d. He has also addressed the role played by technology in development, stating that it \u201cmakes the financial system more accessible to people\u201d.<strong> \u201cIt is changing the way development happens\u201d<\/strong>, he has concluded.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17281\" style=\"width: 2170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17281\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17281\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BBVA_006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2160\" height=\"1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BBVA_006.jpg 2160w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BBVA_006-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BBVA_006-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BBVA_006-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2160px) 100vw, 2160px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Achim Steiner, UNDP&#8217;s highest representative, during his presentation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During her presentation, <strong>Mary Snapp, Vice President of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/philanthropies\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Microsoft Philanthropies<\/strong><\/a>, shared that, \u201cin this age of innovation, <strong>we must ensure that no one is left behind.<\/strong> There is enormous potential for women entrepreneurs to participate in the digital economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Irene Arias, CEO of the <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fomin.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IDB Group\u2019s Multilateral Investment Fund<\/strong><\/a>, has highlighted that <strong>gender equality is today \u201ca cross-cutting issue for governments, companies, and civil society.\u201d<\/strong> And she has added that that today, more than ever, \u201ctechnology and the digital transformation will be the single most important factor in the expansion of financial opportunities for women, many of whom do not share in the benefits generated by today\u2019s financial markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the IDB, in Latin America, small and medium enterprises are the backbone of the region\u2019s economy. <strong>They represent more than 90% of all businesses, generating over half of the total employment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With regards to entrepreneurship, it is the region with the highest gender parity: for every 10 male entrepreneurs, there are 8 enterprising women. In Europe, this proportion goes down to five women for every ten men, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM).<\/p>\n<p>According to UN Women, in countries such as Peru or Panama where the BBVA Microfinance Foundation operates (aside from Colombia, Chile and the Dominican Republic), 35% of single mothers live with less than 50% of the average income. Furthermore, for every 100 men in the region, aged 25-34 years old, living in extreme poverty, there are 132 women living under the same condition. Like what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UN Women<\/strong><\/a><strong> representative Anuradha Seth <\/strong>has shared in her closing remarks, \u201cpromoting women\u2019s access to finance boosts income growth and income security. It is through these channels that f<strong>inancial inclusion accelerates poverty reduction \u2013 the overarching Goal of the 2030 Agenda\u201d<\/strong>.
