This was how Minerva Mirabal once replied to a death threat due to her bold opposition to the Trujillo regime. She and her sisters Patria and Mar\u00eda Teresa firmly resisted the dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, and their violent deaths 57 years ago detonated the world\u2019s fight against gender violence.\u00a0This tragedy has\u00a0also become an opportunity to remember<strong> women around the world who continue to suffer physically, psychologically, sexually and economically just because they are women.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent data show that although progress has been made in terms of reducing violence against women and girls, society still has a long way to go to achieve a complete halt on gender abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #CCC; border-width: 1px; margin-bottom: 5px; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"\/\/www.slideshare.net\/slideshow\/embed_code\/key\/4ur569bVP7z1l8\" width=\"740\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">\n<p>Gender-based violence is multi-dimensional, but its scope is oftentimes confined around the physical, psychological and sexual perspectives. The existence and persistence of <strong>economic violence is not usually considered<\/strong>, and only lately have studies and reports regarded this aspect.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic violence is defined as any behavior involving the use or misuse of financial resources, including deprivation,\u00a0or retention of money or property, to make a woman financially dependent by maintaining control over financial resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited data is available on the incidence of economic violence. However,<b> the economic aspect is an influential catalyst for violence<\/b>, according to the World Bank<b>.<\/b><\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a woman is deprived of economic resources, she is more dependent on income recipients, who are usually men. Her lack of means would prevent her from leaving an abusive relationship, making her susceptible to be a victim of domestic abuse and proving that gender violence is also originated and perpetuated by the impoverished situation. In fact, the prevalence of violence is more frequent in underprivileged environments. The <a href=\"http:\/\/wbl.worldbank.org\/~\/media\/WBG\/WBL\/Documents\/Reports\/2016\/Women-Business-and-the-Law-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 Women, Business and the Law Report<\/a> states that <\/span><b>\u201cwomen living in wealthier households have a 45% lower risk of violence than those living in poorer ones.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, it is with the spirit of providing equal access to economic resources that the <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/\">BBVA Microfinance Foundation (BBVAMF)<\/a> and UN Women have partnered through a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/alianza-entre-onu-mujeres-y-fundacion-microfinanzas-bbva-para-promover-el-desarrollo-y-la-inclusion-de-las-emprendedoras-de-bajos-ingresos-de-america-latina-caribe\/\">Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)<\/a> <\/b><\/strong>three years ago, reinforced with a joint action plan that was recently stipulated.<strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Both institutions advocate for <\/span><b>female economic empowerment and the elimination of any constraints towards this aim, such as violence against women. <\/b><\/strong>They have identified financial inclusion, capacity building (training and education), as well as livelihood acquisition in the form of microenterprises as tools to achieve them.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, the Foundation, through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/entities\/\">entities in Latin America<\/a>, is currently implementing its own initiatives with the aim of contributing to mitigate and prevent gender violence. Some of these include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Capacity-building through workshops and lectures about gender-based violence\u00a0in Chile and the Dominican Republic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in the Dominican Republic, a collaborative agreement with non-government and public agencies has been signed for provision of legal \u00a0and psychological support as well as access to microcredits for victims<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Performance evaluation of projects and initiatives oriented towards women\u2019s empowerment and gender violence prevention in its six entities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public sensitization and awareness creation through the media on the current issues about women\u2019s \u00a0economic empowerment through <a href=\"http:\/\/progresomicrofinanzas.org\/en\/\"><em>Progreso<\/em><\/a>, its online legal magazine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13815\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/international-day-against-gender-violence.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"952\" height=\"828\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/international-day-against-gender-violence.jpg 952w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/international-day-against-gender-violence-180x157.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/international-day-against-gender-violence-768x668.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Latin America, women are now highly participating in generating income, may it be through paid employment or microenterprising. <\/span><b>It may be easy to imagine them being more empowered, catching up to their male counterpart, but cultural and social norms as well as gender stereotypes still limit their economic empowerment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Namely, early marriages and pregnancies, their disproportionate share of household chores, men abandoning family maintenance, and the consequent increase in single-parent households headed by women raise their economic risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly, women belonging to the \u201cSticky floors\u201d and \u201cBroken ladders\u201d groups- as identified by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.unwomen.org\/-\/media\/field%20office%20americas\/documentos\/publicaciones\/2017\/03\/unw16017%20executive%20summary%20web%20eng.pdf?la=en&amp;vs=5713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 report on <em>Progress of Women in Latin America and the Caribbean<\/em> (UN Women)<\/a> &#8211; are more prone to struggle against poor access to secure jobs, lack of opportunity for education and lifelong learning, and excessive household work. These situations <\/span><b>restrain their ability to hone their skills and access stable livelihoods so they could gain economic independence and reduce their chances of being gender violence victims.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13805\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/violencia-genero-infog-ENG-1024x967.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/violencia-genero-infog-ENG-1024x967.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/violencia-genero-infog-ENG-180x170.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/violencia-genero-infog-ENG-768x725.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 25th, 1960, the lifeless bodies of the Mirabal sisters were found inside their vehicle, as their attackers tried to silence their voices. Yet their struggle outlived them so much, that ending gender violence is currently included as a target under Goal 5 in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/sector-development\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>. Removing one of the biggest roadblocks towards sustainable development is not only acceptable- it is necessary. Still, even without this rationale, <\/span><b>ending gender violence should not only serve as a means to an end. It should be the norm. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As citizens of an ever-progressing global community, no one must be left behind.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIf they kill me, my arms will stretch out of my tomb and I will be stronger\u201d.
