\u201cWhen one becomes a teacher for vocation,\u00a0and teaches from the heart, even if he works for 100 years, the job is never boring\u201d. With these words,\u00a0BBVA Microfinance Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0dominican entrepreneur Bienvenida Robert<\/strong>, describes the beauty of being able to teach so many. \u201cA child\u201d, she adds, \u201cis like a blank page where a teacher writes lessons that would last his lifetime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her passion and determination provided the strength she needed to found a school, despite having few people believe in her.<\/strong> \u201cTo set my project up, I had to make decisions and turn deaf ears to those who would approach me and tell me that this was not feasible<\/strong>; that it was more secure and stable to continue being an employee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA child is like a blank page where a teacher writes lessons that would last his lifetime\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Today, she proudly shares how time proved her right: her school, which is named after one of the greatest Latin American humanists of the 20th century, accommodates almost 1,000 students. \u201cThe Pedro Henr\u00edquez Ure\u00f1a<\/a> school was born out of a dream.\u201d<\/strong> The dream of giving her community one of the most valuable assets of the society: education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teachers as engines of development and social change<\/h3>\n

On World Teachers\u2019 Day,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0UNESCO<\/a>\u00a0reminds that teachers\u00a0are \u201cessential for the world\u2019s sustainable development, and constitute the most influential and powerful force to achieve equity, access and quality in education.\u201d Because of this, education appears as Goal number 4 out of the 17 others in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda<\/a> of the United Nations.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It is hoped that this year would be a witness to ensure and provide \u201cinclusive and quality education for all.\u201d This\u00a0goal would be incomprehensible without teachers, to which the UN highly refers in one of the SDG 4\u2019s targets.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday, this school is a reality thanks to the unconditional support that was given to me by Banco Adopem\u201d<\/strong>, shared Bienvenida, the main character of this story. The BBVA Microfinance Foundation\u2019s entity in the Dominican Republic<\/a> provides the necessary aid so that this teacher, mother and wife could contribute to making a more equitable world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMicrocredits show us how something so small and mundane could grow in solidarity,<\/strong> providing fundamental educational value for the society\u2019s transformation\u201d, pointed out the Dean of <\/span>Universidad de Granada<\/span><\/i>, Pilar Aranda, in the inaugural ceremony for this year\u2019s academic course, held at the Melilla campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

At almost 70 years old, Bienvenida doesn\u2019t want to hear anything about retirement. She trusts that she could still receive more children and young people from nearby towns to give them the opportunity to go beyond the destiny imposed by their birth and not by their talents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recalling the words of Rebeca Grynspan, Iberoamerican Secretar<\/a>y General,<\/a> she said that talent \u201cis equally distributed around the world”. She also added, \u201copportunity is not\u201d<\/strong>. \u201cOne of the major challenges for professors is to contribute to the formation of values in children\u201d, concludes Bienvenida.
