{"id":7584,"date":"2017-03-21T10:48:25","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T10:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/sector-development\/empoderamiento-la-mujer\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T11:27:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T10:27:31","slug":"empoderamiento-la-mujer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/sector-development\/empoderamiento-la-mujer\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s empowerment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What happens when women progress?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KQmBwqcRgbk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Challenge<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>We are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/fundacion-microfinanzas-bbva-primera-del-mundo-en-contribucion-al-desarrollo-para-la-igualdad-de-genero-segun-la-ocde\/\">top global contributor to gender equality initiatives<\/a> according to the OECD in 2020, 2021 and 2022.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economic autonomy of women in Latin America and the Caribbean remains a challenge because <\/span><b>the majority have informal employment, assume greater burdens of caregiving and unpaid domestic work, and participate in economic sectors particularly hit by economic crisis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The economic activities they engage in\u2014commerce (61%) and services (20%)\u2014generate less revenues, and only 9% are dedicated to agricultural activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, <\/span><b>67% of the new entrepreneurs served by the BBVA Microfinance Foundation are single\u00a0 heads of households with dependents in their care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This trend has become an additional obstacle that increases the risk of them falling into poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender gaps widened during the pandemic, and their levels of poverty and vulnerability have not decreased since then. <\/span><b>10% of women worldwide live in extreme poverty, on less than $2.15 a day, according to the United Nations.<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/sites\/g\/files\/zskgke326\/files\/2023-08\/undplac-regional-gender-equality-strategy-2023-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> In Latin America, 62% of women are in a situation of multidimensional poverty<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which implies that, in addition to a lack of economic resources, these women suffer deficiencies in health, education, and housing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Opportunity<\/h2>\n<p><b>Serving women entrepreneurs is betting on the future.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Women are catalysts for progress due to their important contribution to the development of their families and their environment, to sustainable and inclusive growth, and to the reduction of poverty. <\/span><b>Women entrepreneurs allocate 90% of their income to family and social prosperity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mainly by financing their children&#8217;s education, according to the FAO.<\/span><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/en\/tag\/womens-stories\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28319 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/meet-them.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a>\n<h2>The Commitment<\/h2>\n<p>Know what is the vision and<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/WEE-Commitment-GFMBBVA-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> commitment of BBVA Microfinance Group<\/a><\/strong> on women\u2019s economic empowerment.<\/p>\n<h2>The Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>BBVA Microfinance Foundation is committed to women\u2019s economic empowerment. The Foundation serves 1<strong>.8 million entrepreneurs in the region (64% of the loan portfolio)<\/strong>. We have also developed communal banking products for those in situations of greater vulnerability, as well as individual loans for those with larger businesses, along with educational and health loans for women. We provide loans for the acquisition of digital devices under more favorable conditions to support the digitalization of their businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Non-financial services: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we complete our value proposition with training in digital skills, online marketing, and leadership, together with other allies such as IDB Lab, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, Care, CAF, Fundes, Vital Voices, Fundaci\u00f3n Pepsico, Fundaci\u00f3n Kodea, Google, Wom, Tigo, CLARO,\u00a0 Eidos, Corotos, Trust for the Americas, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have built an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bancoadopem.com.do\/banco-adopem-y-bid-lab-lanzan-comunidad-emprendedora-digital-para-pymes-lideradas-por-mujeres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Entrepreneur Digital Community<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where women can train on a free e-learning platform where we offer various training paths with content adjusted according to the needs and knowledge of each entrepreneur, as well as training to create online businesses, use digital payments, or partner up.We offer training content on gender roles on the virtual training platforms of our entities and offer financial education programs with a gender focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionmicrofinanzasbbva.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Amanda-Nunez.jpg\" \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Caring for their well-being: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We promote micro-insurance with a gender focus with oncological coverage, protected maternity offering financial aid for the breastfeeding period and nanny services, or specific health coverage for them (mammograms, health check-ups, psychological and legal consultations, pediatric and geriatric care, rural technical assistance) for between 1-3 dollars a month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also conduct studies to learn about the time they dedicate to caregiving and how gender roles influence financial decision-making in their households.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Internal Equity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women&#8217;s empowerment is part of our corporate culture. We have equity and diversity committees in all our entities. We have promoted diversity and equity policies, inclusive communication manuals, and protocols against workplace sexual harassment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, we offer training on unconscious gender biases for our collaborators and advisors, on gender roles, or new masculinities. We carry out leadership and mentoring programs for our female collaborators in order to promote female talent and their professional development. The FMBBVA has subscribed to the Women&#8217;s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) of UN Women, the United Nations Global Compact, and we have participated in the Gender Equality Seal of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/es\/paraguay\/sello-de-igualdad-de-genero-para-instituciones-publicas-y-privadas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNDP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, we have participated in several editions of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/par.aequales.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAR Ranking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Aequales, a free annual measurement tool, a leader in the Latin American region, that evaluates the gender equity conditions of more than 800 Latin American companies. Its more than 200 variables reflect the conditions of equity within the internal core of organizations.
